Not really part of Sarah's birthday celebration, but we invited the Pod Squad over on the 16th for dinner. David realized it had been a while since he'd fired up the smoker and it seemed like time. And, of course, that's too much food for just the two of us.
The next afternoon, Michelle drove down for a quick visit. Again, close to Sarah's birthday so we went with it (normally, David is a stickler for celebrating on the day). On Sarah's actual birthday, she opened a couple more presents, including this great jersey Robert sent her for the "Maps" in the style of the Mets! Then we drove down to Barboursville Vineyards and the 1804 Cottages. It was a little rainy that night, but the wine tasting was great and the greenhouse that happened to be attached to our room, was perfect for enjoying the sound of the rain.
The next day was spectacular, much nicer than the forecast. Which was perfect. We checked out the grounds, the ruins and then headed to Monticello. It was a great day to wander the grounds and tour the house.
We'd been to Monticello before, but it's been over a decade. And they continue to learn more and explain better how Jefferson lived there, how the house and grounds were run and what the country was like then.
The next day, we headed home via a nice walk through Preddy Creek. A nice, well-maintained, very easy trail in a nice county park. It was a great way to stretch our legs before the drive home. All-in-all, it lovely week of birthday activities!
