The Foursome

When Loren and Sarah moved their family to Richmond in 1972, Sarah started looking for a school for David (about to start the 4th grade). They found Richmond Montessori School and a lifelong friend in the Head of School, Martha. She later married Gordon Mabey and the "The Foursome" was born. For over thirty years they shared food, fun, travel and tragedy. Martha sent these photos to Loren and Sarah when Loren was in hospice care after an 18 month battle with Lymphoma.

At left, the foursome: Loren, Sarah, Martha and Gordon, in Whitestone, VA; below, making Oysters Rockefeller (there was an annual competion to see whose would be the "best").

Good meals were always part of the game plan, and usually when the foursome gathered to cook, it was a new meal each time.
Peaks of Otter was a favorite vacation spot.
The Valentine's Day Bloody Mary brunches at Martha and Gordon's on Hanover Avenue were famous. David, Loren and Sarah's youngest son, and Lars, Martha's son were drafted into tending bar at one of the parties. (Well, not really drafted, they were well paid.)
That bartending salary may have helped Lars pay for the moped that impressed David.
Along with good food and good drink, the foursome also enjoyed good friends. Phyllis and Bill Cullison, below right, were some of the best.

As the kids grew, they learned to enjoy the get togethers as well: David and Jessica helped both with the cooking and the eating.

Martha and Gordon lived for a while in Oaxaca, Mexico and Loren and Sarah visited them there (as did David and Sarah Z.).
Sarah and Martha have become a twosome.
