The Hendry MacNaughton Connection

MacNaughton Coat of Arms In Alexandria, Va. there is a tradition of a Scottish Christmas parade every year, early in December. We would parade with the MacNaughton clan because Hendry (see The Descendants of John Hendry) is a sept of Clan MacNaughton.

I knew there was a MacNaughton connection becuase we have some MacNaughton tartan ties and hats. But I had to look up exactly what the connection was. That's when I found that link above to Scotclans.com. As Wikipedia says, septs are family names that differ from the clan name.

I started to look more closely into this because of the email exchange below (spurred by the rumored connection to Robert E. Lee.

In 1970, I had a letter from Robert McLellan, who Cornelia and I had visited in High Corrie (Arran) to share our Hendry family lore. In the letter he told me that Hendry and Henry were the same name. However, I continued and continue to protect and defend the "d" in my Hendry and commend that practice to all who bear the name. That would be Lee and all of our Savannah (and wherever they are) descendants of Alfred Iverson Hen*D*ry.

Hello all! Let me add to this that when Wendy, Alex, Stuart and I were on Arran recently we collected various documents from other American Hendry's who had been there and met with the same historian. Many of those documents also refuted the Robert E Lee/Lighthorse Harry Lee relationship. There's a bunch of stuff stashed in a Google Drive folder (not very organized) which you are welcome to browse here.

This (learning that we aren't (I will throw in "by most accounts") related to "Cousin Bobby") was one of two disappointments in an otherwise fantastic trip. The other was learning that the "d" in Hendry - which I've always thought made my name special and distinct from all those common Henry's could have been a spelling error. We are likely related to the Henry's, Henrie's, Hendrie's as well. Or maybe their names are the ones misspelled!

After this discussion, I would be remiss if I didn't point out that Scotclan.com notes the common Henry and several other variations on the spelling as being septs of the MacNaughton clan.
