Robots

Robert and some friends from school signed up for Junior FIRST Lego League and are working on the challenge to show an invention which has made a significant change in the life of a senior. They choose to demonstrate two inventions: washing machines and fast trains.

That was a great lead in to the competition this weekend for the older kids. Their challenge, build a robot that can play Frisbee golf. We went to go check it out at the DC convention center.

March 29, 2013. Robert was taken by the robots, the competition and the team dressed up like blocks from Minecraft (a video game that is all the rage).
In addition to being able to toss a Frisbee into the goal — very impressive by itself — the robots get extra points for being able to climb the tower; here 1389 and 1731 are both off the ground for an extra 10 points each. March 29, 2013.

Did I mention that Robert was smitten? OK, we all were; it was really cool. March 29, 2013.

And beyond the teams, there were sponsors and other exhibitors: like the DC police and their bomb disposal robot.

There were some smaller robots you could drive on your own.

And some even smaller you could program to do your bidding.

We left while the competition was still going on — and they are back at it tomorrow. I can easily imagine we may be back in a few years to cheer on our team. March 29, 2013.
