Sarah said,
The picture was painted by someone in Colulmbia, a member of Granddaddy's S.S. class whose name started with a B (Barker?) This is needed for family memories because it was the site of the Williams family reunions for many years. It is also needed because the site no longer exists, there is now a small subdivision there, consisting of trailers etc. There may be no access to the black water of the Edisto where L & S used to go swimming (not sure about David, I think not) as well as earlier generations of Williams boys (and girls??).

Leland said,
You can still drive close to the site. You go south from Norway a few miles south of the turn-off to Willow Swamp Church (present site of Williams/Tyler reunions). Turn right onto a dirt road just short of the Edisto River bridge. Very soon, you cross the railroad track and then you are in the trailer subdivision. At the end of the road is the shelter the family formerly used for the reunion picnic. A few years ago, O.T. (Wyman's nephew) still owned this piece of land, having sold the rest of it. I don't think he retained any river access. O.T. died some few months ago; his wife, Edna, is living in Bamberg.

Who has this painting? Isn't there also a Bob Barker photograph of the Edisto? Cornelia is not confident that Barker did the painting. Are you sure, Loren? In the old days, there was a guest speaker/preacher at the family reunions. Mr. Barker did this at least once. Mr. Barker was Fairfield Baptist Association Mission Director. Dad was a Board member. Mr. Barker was an accomplished photographer. He and Mr. S. C. Hawkins were official photographers for our wedding.

My first memory of the Williams/Tyler reunion was probably 1939 or 40. At the front side of the portrait was a beach where we swam. At the far end(quite a distance) was a partially submerged tree limb that moved up and down with the current. My insensitive brothers convinced me that it was an alligator!

Was Mr. Barker the owner of the Leica IIIg camera which Granddaddy gave me when I was about 16? I recall it had been given to Granddaddy by the man's wife after he died. My memories of the reunions are of the shelter, lots of food, lots of people, lots of lawn chairs and, maybe, swimming, or at least wading, in the river.

I remember the shelter, the folding chairs, the ice tea, and feeling like there were a lot more Tylers than Williamses at the reunions. I can't remember ever swimming or wading in the river, but I remember the water being black -- maybe that's why. I'm also afraid to say that I've forgotten just where this picture used to hang in 213 King St.

The picture was hanging in the living room over the library table next to the hall door. A fun story about that table was that Mom wanted to get rid of that table, saying they had had it as long as they had been married. Dad replied 'you have had me as long as you have been married, too.'

  1. We have the painting (watercolor).
  2. In the lower right corner on the front are the initials ROB.
  3. On the back is this hand-written note: "To our good friends - Dr. & Mrs. W.L. Williams March 1969 from the Barkers".
  4. The answer to the question not yet asked: "How did David come to have a photo of this painting with which to trigger all the recollections and comments?" Answer - Several years agoat a Williams-Tyler reunion a Tyler family member was talking aobut preparing an updated family history and he was looking for pictures with which to illustrate it. I told him I had a painting of Tyler's Llanding and would send it to him to copy. When I got home from the reunion, Sarah said, "No, you might not get it back." I agreed with her sage advice, so I got it to David to photo and he sent the photo to the Tyler family member and returned the painting to me. I've forgotten the name of the Tyler family member and I've heard nothing since about an updated history.
  5. With regard to Lee's question about the Leica, I remember Mrs. Barker giving it to Dad (and also an electric razer which I think Dad gave to Leland).
  6. My favorite memory of Tyler's Landing is about playing water polo with a watermelon with Leland, Heyward Dantzler and others.

I remember the reunions at the river very well. I used to go with my grandmother, Maude Metts Williams, my uncle, Marshall Williams, my aunt Margaret Williams and their children. Burns Williams and I used to swing off a vine and dive in the murky, swirling cold water. It was held on July 4 and my father, C.B. Williams, never could go because he had to work. He would ship me off to Orangeburg to go. I remember the folding chairs, the iced tea, the shed where everyone prayed, ate and sweated. It was always hot but the food and the friendship made up for it.

Melinda said,
question for charles williams: I am hoping you could please tell me if the aunt and uncle you mentioned (Marshall & Margaret Williams) are the same as David Marshall "Carbine" Williams and Margaret (Maggie) Cook (married name Williams)? I am a distant relative somehow, but I haven't yet been able to complete the link to my family. My dad passed away last year, but he told me that "Carbine" Williams is his 6th cousin, related somehow through Maude E. Williams, wife of David Edwin Baldwin. Any information you might have would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I'm pretty sure the Marshall and Margaret mentioned by Charles are the ones mentioned here in the Williams and Tyler Families written by my grandfather.
