8. Daniel Swift Tyler. Two children of Levi Silvester and Catherine Thomas Tyler are of especial interest in this history of the Williams and Tyler families; namely, Catherine Annie Elizabeth Tyler and Daniel Swift Tyler. See reference to Catherine Annie Elizabeth Tyler in Part I, Section 8.

Daniel Swift Tyler was born December 30, 1856, near Norway, South Carolina, and lived his entire life in this area. While farming was his main business, he served as magistrate in Willow District, Orangeburg County, for a number of years. His popularity with the people and their confidence in him are shown by the fact that he seldom had any opposition when running for this political office.

He lived a quiet and unassuming life. He was treasurer of Willow Swamp Baprist church for many years and was a deacon in this church at the time of his death. Perhaps, the political office which he held should be called by its other name -- that of Justice of the Peace -- for he believed in peace and, undoubtedly, settled out of court the great majority of cases which came before him for trial.

Daniel Swift Tyler married Janie Williams February 24, 1895. (See Part I, Section 6.) Janie was born in Aiken County, near Wagener, South Carolina.

Although she never attended an institution of higher learning and, perhaps, did not go very far in the public schools of her day, Janie Williams Tyler was a woman of culture. She was a real student of the Bible and enjoyed nothing more in life than to discuss it with those who were interested. Her life was devoted to her family and her church. At the death of her sister, Mary Etta Williams Spradley (See Part I, Section 6), she and her husband took into their home her sister's two children, Myrtis, age four, and Gertrude (Mollie), age two, and reared both to womanhood.

Daniel Swift Tyler died November 12, 1927, and his wife, Janie, August 25, 1948. They are buried in the cemetery of Willow Swamp Baptist Church, where they were members for many years.

A question has been raised about the place of birth of Janie Williams Tyler. On page 49, second paragraph from the bottom, it is stated that she was born in Aiken County, near Wagener, South Carolina. Her father, Isaiah, was living in Orangeburg County in 1860 and 1870. He is not shown as living in Aiken County until 1880. (See page 6.) Janie was born in 1865. Her name appears in the household of Isaiah in the 1870 census. This has caused some to believe that she was born in Orangeburg County.

The writer believes that at the time of her birth in 1865, her father, Isaiah, was living in what was then Orangeburg County. Later, the boundary line between Aiken and Orangeburg Counties was shifted so as to make the place of her birth in what is now Aiken County. correction
