| We flew out to San Diego to celebrate Elise and Martin's wedding — with Sarah's side of the family. Sunny Southern California did not live up to its name. But it was a lovely wedding complete with a rainbow as the rain cleared. We took advantage of the trip to check out San Diego, Old Town and Pacific Beach before driving up to Mission Viejo for the main event. | |
| Old Town San Diego is very different from Old Town Alexandria. We did learn a lot about the early days of San Diego and enjoyed the collection of wagons to go along with the history. And we watched a bit of surfing both from our hotel window and from down on the beach. It may have been cloudy, but the temperature was very nice. | |
| After cleaning up from our walk on the beach, we drove up to Mission Viejo and joined the group for the post-rehersal late lunch. That's Sarah's Aunt Betty, Sarah, her Uncle Stan and brother David below. | |
| The ceremony was lovely! The happy couple, their family and friends were all enjoying the celebration. And we took advantage of the rainbow for a photo — the official wedding photographer got a great shot of Elise and Martin under the rainbow. It's hard to think of a more auspicous start to a long and happy marriage. | |
| After a fantastic reception followed by more visisting with family over a relaxed breakfast the next day, we drove up to L.A. Neither of us had seen the La Brea Tar Pits; truly an odd thing right in downtown Los Angeles. And note the cone below the sign below, that's a tar covered traffic cone. It's still oozing tar there. | |
| Then we headed up to the Griffith Observatory to take in the view. We didn't stay to look at the stars (hard to see through the clouds), but the view of LA and Hollywood was very cool. | |
| The next day, we drove back down to San Diego on the Pacific Coast Highway — pretty, but not the famously pretty part further north. And we stopped in at Seal Cove on the way. It lived up to its reputation! The rocks were covered with seals, sea lions, pelicans, cormorants and sea gulls. | |
| Our final sight to see was the USS Midway, now a museum. We had been told to look out for a photo of David Z.'s father-in-law. Sarah spotted it on display, a very young Sam Hubbard. | |
| The next day, just as the clouds were clearing out, we headed back to Alexandria. | |
