Seattle Birthday, July 2025

Play slide show — just for looking at the pictures.

We had a great birthday visit with Robert in Seattle. It was, however, a bit different from prior birthdays. Robert has a full time summer internship, so Sarah and I had more time to play than he had time free. We happened to arrive at the peak of a heat wave Thursday night and offered Robert our hotel couch for a chance to sleep in air conditioned comfort. And then we saw him off from the hotel as he went to work (you can just see him in window if you click that picture for a larger version).

We took advantage of the time to check out the Seattle Art Museum which we'd not been to before. They have an impressive an interesting collection spanning the whimsical, like these smiling clouds, to historical, like the Chicago iron elevator screen in front of the imagined Pacific Northwest scene behind it.

They also have a touring exhibition of Ai Weiwei's work (which was more varied then we expected). Including the cool, wooden Buckey ball (Helen declined the idea of building her own in her spare time).

We met Robert at his office Friday evening and he suggested we check out the Luke Wing Museum before they closed. That was another surprisingly fun and informative stop on this trip.

The next day, we enjoyed the fantastic weather by taking a stroll around campus before Sarah and I met up with Kelly and family for brunch. In the afternoon, we met Robert at his second summer job with the Cascades Frisbee team. This was their final game of the season and they are playing in a new-to-them stadium at Interbay. (Their old stadium is being demolished and rebuilt — work we know it needs). They won the game by 9 points over the Oregon Steele. Sadly though, the Cascades record was not good enough to get them into the playoffs this year.

That was a Saturday evening game — sunset was just before 9:00pm — so Robert wanted to sleep in the next day. Sarah and I enjoyed a walk through the campus; the mountain was just barely out before we snagged a car and headed to the Washington State History Museum in Tacoma.

It was another surprising gem with a lot of natural history as well as cultural history exhibits. But the star of the show was the huge model train display of Tacoma about 1950.

The next day, Monday, we started the baseball portion of the trip... But first (while Robert was working) Sarah and I tried out packrafts. They are super lightweight and are starting to get a pretty good reputation for whitewater boating (in addition to combining hiking and rafting — alpine lake anyone?).

Adam at Optimum Adventures was very helpful and accommodating in arranging for us to try out two models from Alpacka Raft. Because they are not intended for high pressure, inflation was pretty quick and easy with either a small, battery powered, electric pump or a bag pump (some newer models need a top off with a higher pressure pump). We were both blown away after inflating them when we picked them up for the carry to the Lake Washington beach: about 10 pounds!, almost nothing.

We met up with Robert at the Link station for the train ride to the Mariners game. We were on a mission to get Big Bird bobble-heads (which we did), but we stopped in for a photo in the moose den first. Sadly, the Mariners lost that game, I won't say by how much. But we had a good time. And Robert has a Big Bird at his office and in his apartment now :) In the photo below, I was hoping to capture a Cal Raleigh home run; the ball you can see about to fly over first didn't make it far enough and he was out. And check out the weather — just fantastic!

The next day, Tuesday, was the big day: Robert's 21st!

He managed to get the afternoon off so we headed to his apartment where the ping pong table was shockingly free. No score that I recall from the volleying back and forth. We brought cupcakes and candles in addition to a few presents. Robert tried to explain the basics of Envelops of Cash, but we did not have time to try to play.

Sarah wedged in a quick shopping trip and I met up with Robert, Aiden, Ivy and Liam at the metro station on the way to the next Mariners game (Robert and Aiden are true fans — they were at the Friday night game as well). Robert enjoys getting there early to avoid the crowds at the concession stands. And we had a chance to try our hands at pitching: Robert's fastball was about 48 mph. Sarah and Michael joined us at the game, which the Mariners won in honor of Robert's birthday.

David Z. was at the game as well, in his favorite seat. He came by to say hi in the middle of game, and Robert, Sarah and I managed to catch up with him afterwards for a snack and drink at a very nice restaurant, Palace Kitchen. It was great to be able to spend some time together.

The next day, while Robert was at work, Sarah and I wandered down to the Seattle Aquarium. It was crazy busy around there and we got our membership's worth just in being able to skip the lines. The Bowhead Guitarfish remains a draw for us and for others. It was fun to watch the fish ignore the diver cleaning and tank and then answering questions.

David had a late meeting that night, but Lynn took us and Chris and Alexa out for another stellar dinner, this time in Ballard at Staple and Fancy. We had time for a game of Codenames before Robert needed to head back to his apartment. Sadly, that was our last night in Seattle on this trip. the next morning, we walked around David Z. and Lynn's neighborhood before heading to the airport; by which time, the beautiful sun was out, showing off Mount Rainier.
