The Williams and Tyler Families By Wyman L. Williams COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA JUNE 1980 To the memory of my parents, BRAXTON BRAGG WILLIAMS and CATHERINE ANNIE ELIZABETH TYLER WILLIAMS, and my uncle and aunt, DANIEL SWIFT TYLER and JANIE WILLIAMS TYLER, this book is dedicated. Foreword At the annual reunion of the Williams and Tyler families, July 4, 1948, the writer was requested to prepare a history of these two families. This was done in the form of his, A BRIEF RECORD OF THE WILLIAMS AND TYLER FAMILIES, which was published in the late spring of 1949. Thirty-one years later, July 4, 1979, he was requested to write another history of these two families to cover the intervening years between 1949 and the present, and to go back into the past of the two families to the extent this would be found possible. On the following pages will be found his efforts to comply with this request. In attempting to write a book like this, it is, of course, necessary to decide where to begin, where to end, and how far to spread out from each ancestral line. The first two of these presented no difficulty. It was obvious that the book should begin with the most remote available authentic dates and end with the present. But the third of these factors -- how far to spread out or how much to include -- was not as easily settled. It would probably have been interesting and worthwhile to have included information about families that become connected through marriage with the Williams and Tyler ancestral lines. But this stupendous task could not be undertaken. It was, therefore, decided to make this history concern primarily the ancestors and descendants of four people -- Braxton Bragg Williams and his wife, Catherine Annie Elizabeth Tyler Williams, and Daniel Swift Tyler and his wife, Janie Williams Tyler. The book is, accordingly, of chief interest to the descendants of these four people. But it should be of some value to those who are connected with these two families and who may wish, at some future date, to write a history of their particular branch of the Williams or Tyler ancestral line. On the pages of this book will be found the names of people, now deceased, who were very close and dear to the writer. The temptation to eulogize them has been great, but this has not been done. It was thought best to simply record only those things about them which would be necessary to identify and describe them. Likewise, it was not easy to refrain from presenting the many virtues of the living, but, here too, facts, rather than praise, are given. The material for this book came from many sources. Family records in old Bibles have been examined. Cemeteries have bean visited and inscriptions read from their monuments. Graves registrations have been studied for possible information about the location of graves of deceased ancestors. Interviews have been held with people who were knowledgeable in historical facts concerning the Williams and Tyler families. Various and sundry historical documents have been examined. Research was done in the Orangeburg Historical Society, The South Carolina Department of Archives and History, the library of the University of South Carolina, the library of the University of North Carolina, and The North Carolina Department of Archives and History. Guy Tyler of Atlanta, Georgia, made available to the writer a number of documents which were invaluable to writing the Tyler part of this history. J. B. Pilcher of Cordele, Georgia, who has done a considerable amount of research concerning the history of the Williams family, shared with the writer many results of his research. The assistance of both of these men is gratefully acknowledged. PART I THE WILLIAMS FAMILY 1. The Early Days of the Williams Family. The earliest ancestors in the Williams family line who can be identified with positive documentary evidence are Theophilus Williams, who was born December 6, 1777, and his wife, Lydia, who was born May 13, 1783. Some descendants of Theophilus and Lydia believe that Lydia was a Williams before she married Theophilus, but the writer has seen no documents to support this. Sampson Williams, the oldest child of Theophilus and Lydia, was living in Lexington County, South Carolina, in 1880. He told the census taker in that year that his mother and father were born in North Carolina. Isaiah Williams, another child of Theophilus and Lydia, told the census taker the same thing. In 1880, Isaiah was living in Aiken County, South Carolina. Therefore, it is definitely established that Theophilus and Lydia were born in North Carolina, but the county of birth is not known. Likewise, the date of their marriage is not known, but it could not have occurred later than the early part of 1800, since their first child, Sampson Williams, was born January 27, 1801. When they moved from North Carolina to South Carolina is also unknown, but they were certainly living in South Carolina when Sampson was born, because he told the census taker in 1880 (Lexington County) that he was born in South Carolina. The first census, which was conducted in 1790, and those that followed for several decades, listed only the names of heads of households. The other family members were listed only as to sex and age brackets. Since Theophilus was only thirteen years old in 1790, he was too young to be recorded in this first census. It would be reasonable, however, to expect him to appear in the census of 1800, but he does not; not in either North Carolina or South Carolina. The reason for this could be that he was not the head of a household in 1800, or that he was simply missed by the census taker. Much research has been engaged in to try to find the father of Theophilus and his other ancestors. The writer has been involved in this and so have others who are interested in the history of the Williams family. Professional genealogists have assisted with the research. All efforts, however, to connect him with any ancestor have been fruitless. The work involved in an undertaking of this kind can better be appreciated when it is considered that the 1790 census shows about five hundred people with the name Williams as heads of households in North Carolina in that year. One of these household heads was probably his father, but to find this household would be a most difficult and time-consuming task. Some consideration should be given to the possibility that the father of Theophilus was not living in 1790. This is because his father could have been a soldier in the war between the Thirteen Colonies and Great Britain and he could have lost his life in it. If this did happen and if he entered the war at an early age, he could have been too young at that time to have previously engaged in anything that would have put his name into the records of those days. For instance, he could have left no will (a careful search has not revealed one) because he had no possessions to leave his family. All of this is, of course, pure supposition, but it is a possible explanation of why all efforts to locate the father of Theophilus have failed. Without knowing his father, it would be virtually impossible to locate any of his other ancestors. In the writer's, A BRIEF RECORD OF THE WILLIAMS AND TYLER FAMILIES, published in 1949, he states that he had tried to find out something about Theophilus Williams, but failed. He remembers talking to Janie Williams Tyler, a granddaughter of Theophilus, about the Williams ancestors. She must not have known anything about her grandfather, such as when he died, where he was buried and who his father was. Otherwise, this information about Theophilus would have been published in the 1949 book. It is recorded in the next section that Lydia, the wife of Theophilus, was illiterate. Because of this, it is not unreasonable to believe that he, too, was illiterate. Should this conclusion be correct, Theophilus could have lived the early days of his life in relative obscurity. This could explain why it was not until 1810 (See Section 2), when he was thirty- three years old, that we are sure his name appears in the records for the first time. If this assumption about his educational background should be correct, this could be the reason why he left nothing in the records about his father or other ancestors. The genealogists, who have searched the records in North Carolina where Theophilus was born to try to connect him with some Williams family line, have thought several times that they had located him, only to find something later to disprove their claim. This research will probably continue. Hopefully, someday, we shall find a "footprint" somewhere in the records which will lead us to greater knowledge of the Williams ancestors. 2. Theophilus and Lydia Williams. As stated in the above section, the year when Theophilus and Lydia moved to South Carolina from North Carolina is not known, but they were certainly living in South Carolina in the early part of 1801. The census of 1810 shows them living in Richland County, South Carolina, in that year. There is strong evidence that they were living in this county in 1807, for on February 2 of that year a Theophilus Williams received a land grant of one hundred and fifty-five acres. (State Grants, Vol. 53, Page 377.) Since no one with this name is recorded in the 1800 census as living in South Carolina, it is reasonable to conclude that the one receiving the land grant was the Theophilus Williams who was born in 1777. Sometime between 1810 and 1820, Theophilus and Lydia moved from Richland County to Lexington County, South Carolina. This is shown by the census of 1820. This move took place by not later than 1813, because their son, Isaiah, was born in Lexington County in that year. In 1830, we find Theophilus and Lydia living in Orangeburg County, South Carolina, as revealed by the census of that year. They do not appear in the 1840 census in either North Carolina or South Carolina, but in the 1850 census, Lydia is recorded as living alone in Orangeburg County as the head of a household. She was then sixty-seven years old. The census taker recorded that she was born in North Carolina and could neither read nor write. Since Lydia was living alone in 1850, Theophilus was probably dead at that time. He could have died prior to 1840. Lydia probably died prior to 1860, since she is not recorded in the census of that year. They were both undoubtedly buried somewhere in Orangeburg County, but all efforts, such as an examination of graves registrations and a search in cemeteries, have failed to locate their graves. 3. The Children of Theophilus and Lydia Williams. Listed below are the names of the thirteen sons and daughters of Theophilus and Lydia Williams with the dates of their births and deaths and, in some cases, other brief facts concerning them: Sampson Williams. Sampson Williams was born January 27, 1801. He settled early in life in Lexington County, South Carolina, and lived there for the remainder of his life The 1860 census of Lexington County shows his wife as having the name Nancy who was then thirty-eight years old, while the 1880 census of the same county records his wife as Ann. Ann's age is given as fifty-seven. Since "Nancy" was thirty-eight years old in 1860 and "Ann" was fifty-seven years old twenty years later, the two names, undoubtedly, refer to the same person. Hence, Sampson's wife was named Nancy Ann or Ann Nancy. Sampson told the census taker in 1880 that his mother and father were born in North Carolina, while he was born in South Carolina. In 1860, Sampson and his wife had the following children according to the Lexington County census of that year: Theophilus born 1840 (named for his grandfather) Lydia born 1842 (named for her grandmother) Ann born 1844 (probably named for her mother) Harriet born 1849 Emory born 1850 (Note. The census shows that Emory was born in 1847, but the monu- ment to his grave shows this birth as November 25, 1850. He lived for a time in Wagener, South Carolina.) Mary born 1854 Unnamed infant born 1860 Lived six months. The date of Sampson's death is not known. He was certainly living in 1880, according to the Lexington County census of that year. It is believed by some of his descendants that he and his wife are buried in the Wise Cemetery, located about six miles from Pelion, South Carolina. It is said that two ordinary field stones (no inscriptions) mark their graves. Mary Williams. Mary Williams was born November 28, 1802. Nothing further is known about her. John Williams. John Williams was born September 12, 1804. The 1850 census of Lexington County, South Carolina, shows the following compo- sition of his family at that time: John born 1804 (father) Mary born 1797 (wife) Theophilus born 1833 (son) Jane born 1836 (daughter) John born 1837 (son) Lydia born 1840 (daughter) Elizabeth born 1842 (daughter) Davis and Martha born 1844 (son and daughter, twins) John died July 26, 1886, and is buried in the cemetery of New Hope Baptist Church, near Pelion, South Carolina. The monument to his grave has this inscription, "Rev. John Williams." He is listed in the 1884 Annual of the South Carolina Baptist Convention as a minister. Also, the minutes of the Edisto Baptist Association, which met October 1-3, 1853, with the Shiloh Baptist Church, Edgefield District, records that the New Hope Baptist Church "ordained J. Williams as their pastor. Jinney Williams. Jinney Williams was born February 3, 1806. Nothing further is known about her. Theophilus Darius Williams. In the writer's family history, published in 1949, the date of birth of this son of Theophilus and Lydia is given as December 15, 1808. The censuses for 1850 and 1860 (Lexington County, South Carolina) indicate, however, that the year of his birth was 1807. The 1850 census shows his family composition as follows: Theophilus age 43 Eleanor age 35 (wife) Sampson W. age 15 (named for his uncle) Sarah A. age 9 Lydia age 4 (named for grandmother) Theophilus D. age 1 (named for father) The 1860 census records two additional children, John and Ellen, whose ages in that year were nine and six, respectively. From other sources, the wife of Theophilus is given as Lydia Corley who died about 1860. Perhaps, she had two given names, Eleanor and Lydia. The date of the death of Theophilus is not known. Since he does not appear in the 1870 census, he probably died between 1860 and 1870. The son, Theophilus Darius, who was one year old in 1850, was born December 8, 1849 and died March 28, 1926. He is buried in the cemetery of Edisto Baptist Church, located about twelve miles from Orangeburg, South Carolina. The monument to his grave shows 1850 as the year of his birth, but 1849 is the year of birth which is recorded in a family Bible. This year of birth also agrees with the census of 1850. He married Ida Frances Smoak March 19, 1876. Ida was born March 21, 1862 and died August 31, 1904. She, too, is buried in the cemetery of Edisto Baptist Church. Among the children of Ida and Theophilus Darius was Ransome J. Williams who was Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina from 1943 to 1945 and Governor from 1945 to 1947. Julius Williams. Julius Williams was born February 11, 1810. He died at an early age. Nothing further is known about him. Roland Williams. Roland Williams was born January 27,1812. He died as a baby. Isaiah Williams. Isaiah Williams was born January 25, 1813. See Section 4 for further information. Hiram Williams. This seventh son of Theophilus and Lydia Williams was born October 17, 1815. He married Sara Jane Warren January 28, 1841. Sara Jane was born March 24, 1825, in Lexington County, South Carolina. She and her husband settled, early after marriage, in Cordele, Georgia, where they spent the rest of their lives. They had eleven children whose names and dates of birth are listed below: Isaiah born April 7,1842 Chesley Anderson born March 3, 1844 Hiram, Jr. born August 16, 1846 Lydia born July 22, 1849 James Warren born January 27, 1852 Govan born July 10, 1854 Columbus C. born March 4, 1857 Sara Jane born March 27, 1860 Joseph Roland born June 6, 1862 David John born October 25, 1864 Nancy Elizabeth born November 23, 1867 Hiram died November 7, 1899, and is buried in Ebenezer Cemetery, Cordele, Georgia. Nancy Williams. Nancy Williams was born June 14, 1818. Nothing further is known about her. Elender Williams. Elender Williams was born September 8, 1820. Nothing further is known about her. Emory Williams. Emory Williams was born April 24, 1824. He married Emerline Johnson who was born November 18, 1835, and died July 7,1903. Emory died January 6,1887. He and his wife are buried at the Vau Cluse Cemetery, Vau Cluse, South Carolina. Emory was from Wagener, South Carolina, and his wife, from Blackville, South Carolina. They lived for a time between Aiken, South Carolina, and Augusta, Georgia. Govan Williams. Govan Williams was born December 25,1828. He settled in Louisiana and died there. The date of his death is not known. 4. Isaiah Williams. Of the children of Theophilus and Lydia Williams, the one we are concerned with in this history is Isaiah Williams. Isaiah Williams was born January 25, 1813, in Lexington County, South Carolina. He later moved to Orangeburg County, for the 1850 census shows him living there. (Note: County boundary lines in those days were not necessarily the same as they are today.) This census records that he was a farmer and had real estate valued at three hundred dollars. Isaiah was still living in Orangeburg County in 1860 and 1870. This is revealed by the censuses for those years. In 1860, he had real estate valued at twenty-one hundred dollars and personal property worth fifteen hundred dollars. He must have suffered some reverses by 1870, for the census of that year shows that the value of his real estate was then only seven hundred dollars, while his personal property had dropped in value to three hundred dollars. Sometime prior to 1880, Isaiah moved to Aiken County. South Carolina, for he is shown living there by the 1880 census. He was then sixty-seven years old. The census records him still as the head of a household, but only some of his children were living with him at that time. It is of interest to note that he told the census taker his parents, Theophilus and Lydia Williams, were born in North Carolina. He spent the rest of his life on his farm in Aiken County. It was located about two miles from the present town of Wagener, South Carolina. In addition to his farming interests, he served as local magistrate for a number of years. According to those tho knew him, Isaiah was a man of deep religious convictions, and was well-read for his day. The writer often heard his mother relate a story concerning him. On the night of the earthquake (August, 1886), he was in their home. No one there had ever heard of an earthquake and all were greatly frightened as were the other residents of the community. Some thought that it was the end of time. But Great-grandfather Isaiah knew what it was and explained it to them. With the dishes rattling and the house quivering, he read aloud from the Bible and invoked for them all the protection of God. The first wife of Isaiah was Martha Elizabeth Vaughan who was born March 27, l824. His second wife, Julia Ann Cooper, was born March 14, 1842. Isaiah died June 25, 1896, and his first wife, Martha Elizabeth, died March l9, 1862. Both are buried in a private cemetery, near Wagener, South Carolina. The land (one acre) for this cemetery was set aside in a deed by Isaiah. The location of the cemetery is described as follows: As one travels from Wagener, South Carolina, to Aiken, South Carolina, turn left a short distance from Wagener. After traveling about a mile, the cemetery is in a wooded area to the left of the highway. There are only five people buried there: Isaiah, Martha Elizabeth, one of their children. and two children of Isaiah's and his second wife, Julia Ann. Monuments mark all five graves. Isaiah's second wife, Julia Ann (who later married a Mr. Woods), died May 8, 1916, and is buried in West View Cemetery, Atlanta, Georgia. 5. The Children of Isaiah and Martha Elizabeth Vaughan Williams. Listed below are the names of the children of Isaiah and Martha Elizabeth Vaughan Williams with the dates of their births and deaths and, in some cases, other information about them: Hiram Williams. Hiram Williams was born August 8. 1842. See Section 7 for further Information about him. James Rollin Williams. James Rollin Williams was born September 2. 1843. He died September 30. 1935. and is buried in a cemetery at Wagener. South Carolina. (Note: This son was called Roland all of his life. but according to his daughter. Mrs. Annie Laurie Williams Gibbs. his real name was Rollin. It appears thus on the monument to his grave.) John W. Williams. John W. Willjams was born December 4. 1845. and died April 19. 1903, at Norway, South Carolina. He is buried in the cemetery of Calvary Baptist Church. near Neeses. South Carolina. Mary Williams. Mary Williams was born November 14, 1848 and died November 13, 1863. She is buried in the private cemetery described in Section 4. Lydia Othillo Williams. Lydia Othillo Williams was born September 3, 1851, and died November 22. 1927. She is buried in the cemetery of Tabernacle Baptist Church, near Salley, South Carolina. She married John Johnson. Ransome Judson Williams. Ransom Judson Williams was born May 29, 1854. and died December 22. 1935. He is buried in Springwood Cemetery in Greenville County. He was a Baptist minister. Elizabeth Williams. Elizabeth Williams was born January 15. 1856 and died November 2. 1929. She is buried in the cemetery of Willow Swamp Baptist Church, near Norway. South Carolina. (Note: The dates recorded here of her birth and death were taken from an old family Bible. The monument to her grave records her birth as January 15. 1855.) She married Jesse Baker December 4, l893. Jordan J. Williams. Jordan J. Williams was born June 9, 1857, and died June 22. 1930. He is buried in a cemetery at Sumter, South Carolina. Byron Williams. Byron Williams was born February 3, 1859. He married Rosa Julia Houck December 14, 1879. Rosa was born February 4, 1863. Byron died August 7, 1937, and Rosa, January 11, 1939. Both are buried in the Williams family Cemetery, near Springfield, South Carolina. The 1860 census shows Isaiah and Martha Elizabeth living in Orangeburg County at that time. Among the children listed in that census is Isaiah, age one year. Since Byron was one year old in 1860 and his name does not occur in the census of that year, he must be this Isaiah which means that he, at first, had his father's name. The 1870 census of Orangeburg County shows him by the name Byron. He was then eleven years old. Joel Govan Williams. Joel Govan Williams was born February 11, 1861, and died December 12. 1946. He is buried in the cemetery of Willow Swamp Baptist Church, near Norway. South Carolina. He was a physician at Norway for a number of years. 6. The Children of Isaiah and Julia Ann Cooper Williams. Listed below are the names of the sons and daughters of Isaiah Williams and his second wife, Julia Ann Cooper Williams, with the dates of their births and deaths and, in some cases, other information about them: Jonathan Williams. Jonathan Williams was born June 28, 1864, near Wagener. South Carolina. He died June 9. 1943, and is buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Dawson. Georgia. He married Olivia Alexander June 15. 1899. Olivia was born February 28. 1880, and died May28. 1978. She, too, is buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery. Janie Williams. Janie Williams was born September 26, 1865 and died August 25. 1948. She is buried in the cemetery of Willow Swamp Baptist Church, near Norway, South Carolina. See Part II, Section 8 for further information about her.) Jerome Williams. Jerome Williams was born March 28. 1867. and died November 3, 1867. He is buried in the private cemetery referred to in Section 4. Barney Bass Williams. Barney Bass Williams was born July 3. 1869. His first wife was Eva Cleckley who was born December 18, 1877, and died September 23. 1911. She is buried in a cemetery at Albany. Georgia. Barney's second wife was Mattie Lou Tanner who was born April 10. 1889, in Campbell County, Georgia. Barney died June 22. 1925, and is buried in the same cemetery with his first wife, Eva. Mary Etta Williams. Mary Etta Williams was born September 14, 1870, and died April 25. 1898. She is buried in the cemetery of New Hope Baptist Church, near Pelion. South Carolina. (Note: The spelling of this name and the dates recorded here were taken from an old family Bible. The inscription on the monument to her grave reads as follows: Marieta Williams, wife of H.M. Spradley. September 9. 1870--April 25, 1898.) Mary Etta (Marieta) Williams and H.M. Spradley were the parents of Myrtis Spradley Goza and Gertrude (Mollie) Spradley Sloan. Myrtis died June 13, 1935, and is buried in the cemetery of Willow Swamp Baptist Church. near Norway, South Carolina. Doyle Williams. Doyle Williams was born December 23. 1873. and died December 18, 1875. He is buried in the private cemetery referred to in Section 4. 7. Hiram Williams. This oldest son of Isaiah and Martha Elizabeth Vaughan Williams is the person of particular interest at this point in the Williams ancestral line. As previously stated. Hiram Williams was born August 8, 1842. He lived in Aiken County (vicinity of Wagener, South Carolina) until he enlisted in the Confederate Army in the War Between the States. His wife was Laura Stevenson who died when their only child. Braxton Bragg Williams, was just a few years old. Shortly after he entered the war, he was joined by his two brothers, James Rollin (Roland) and John W. Williams. The three brothers served in Company I of the Twentieth South Carolina Volunteer Regiment. Hiram was wounded in action and, undoubtedly, died of these wounds. An excerpt from an interview (News and Courier, Charleston. South Carolina). which C. B. Williams (See Section 11A) had with James Rollin (Roland) Williams, is of interest at this point: The battles that followed Cold Harbor were too numerous for him to name off-hand. The three brothers kept in the thick of things as they fought with the Kershaw Command. They were around Petersburg, engaged at Brown's Gap and Strasburg. The early fall found them in the Shenandoah Valley. On October 19. 1864, came the catastrophe at Cedar Creek. The Confederates surprised the federal encampment at daylight. The rout that followed is history. The Yankees retreated so fast that the Confederates themselves became disorganized in the pursuit and what in the morning had been a glorious Confederate success. by night was a Northern victory. The Yankee soldiers fleeing and offering little resistance after an initial stand, the hungry and ill-clothed Confederates fell upon th rich Union stores. They were thus occupied when General Sheridan, who had been absent in the morning, arrived to stop his retreating men, renew their courage and turn them again to the fight. The Confederates by now, it seems, were in complete disorder and in no condition to cope with the superior federal force. It fell to the Twentieth of South Carolina to try to cover the retreat and both colonel and major were captured in the attempt. ''We rallied to give our trains more time to get away.'' said Mr. Williams. ''and then fell back, faked another rally and were going to continue our retreat when Brother Hiram received a shot in the hip. There was no way of carrying him then. We had to move too fast, so l wouldn't leave him. When l saw a company of Northerners approach I ran up to an officer and told him that my brother had been shot and that l wanted to stay with him. He drew his sword and, had l not dodged, l believe the blow that he aimed at me would have cut my head off. He then ordered me taken to the rear and I was quickly surrounded by a squad to execute the order. l had walked a piece with them when l derided to turn around and wave at Brother Hiram. But the ground was hilly and l could no longer see where he lay. We never heard of him after that.'' In Stonewall Cemetery, Winchester, Virginia, just a few miles from the battle grounds of Cedar Creek where Hiram was wounded, is a grave with a marker bearing this inscription: H. Williams Co. D20 S.C. Died Oct. 19, 1864 This is, undoubtedly, his grave. If so, then he died the same day he was wounded, for according to the above interview, ''On October 19, 1864, came the catastrophe at Cedar Creek.'' 8. Braxton Bragg Williams. Braxton Bragg Williams was born in Aiken County, South Carolina, November 27, 1861. He was the only child of Hiram and Laura Stevenson Williams. His mother died and his father was killed in the Confederate War when he was only a few years old. He, therefore, knew very little about his parents. After their deaths, he was reared by his grandmother, Mary (Polly) Stevenson. When he married in 1880, he took his grandmother in his home and cared for her for the remainder of her life. (See 1880 census for Orangeburg County.) On April 11. 1880, Braxton married Catherine Annie Elizabeth Tyler. (See Part II, Section 6.) The wedding ceremony was performed by the Reverend Hiram L. Baggott. The issue of the Orangeburg Democrat for April 30, 1880, has this announcement: Married B.B. Williams at the residence of the bride's mother. April 11, to Miss Annie Tyler, all of Orangeburg County. For the first three years of their married life, Braxton and Annie lived in Aiken County, South Carolina, where their first child, Laura Belle, was born. In 1883, they moved to what was called the Reed Place, near Norway, South Carolina. (The Reed Place was roughly located about a mile north of the Edisto River and a mi1e west of the tracks of the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad.) They remained in the vicinity of Norway for the remainder of their lives. Braxton Williams began life as a day laborer, but by hard work and business ability, he became, at the heyday of his life, one of the largest landowners in Orangeburg County. In addition to his farming interests, he engaged in banking, the manufacture of fertilizer, and the mercantile business. He had little formal education; he probably never attended a graded school. But if this were a handicap to him, he apparently was able to overcome it. He was always ready and willing to extend a helping hand to those in need. He was particularly interested in Willow Swamp Baptist Church, located near Norway, South Carolina. for almost his entire life, he was a deacon and Sunday School teacher in that church. He led in the movement to erect the present church building at Willow swamp and made substantial contributions to its cost. (see Part III.) One evidence of his leadership and respect in which he was held in the church, stands out in the writer's mind. When the Lord's supper was observed in the early days of the Church, only two goblets were used to serve the congregation with "the cup,'' Two deacons (the entire board), each with one goblet would go through the congregation and let the members sip from these two goblets. At some point in time (perhaps, about 1910), it occurred to some of the church members that this was unsanitary. It was suggested that the two goblets be replaced with small individua1 cups in the observance of the Lord's Supper., But some members thought otherwise. They thought that there was something sacred and religious about everybody sipping from the same cups in this special service. As a result, a division developed in the church which threatened to mar its fellowship. The writer, then a little boy, can now visualize Braxton Williams, his father, standing before the congregation and explaining the proposed change. His views prevailed, the division in the membership was averted and the two goblets were replaced with the individual cups. Catherine Annie Elizabeth Tyler Will;ams lived a quiet and unassuming life. The Early Days of the Tyler Family. In the census of 1790, the first to be conducted in the United States, only ten persons with the family name of Tyler are listed as heads of households in South Carolina. One, and only one, of these had the name William, and he is shown as living in the Orangeburg District. In this first census, as well as in the next several ones that followed, the only name recorded in a household was that of the head. No precise ages were given; only age brackets. Even this was not done for females. So, the family composition of this William Tyler is recorded as follows: 1 male over 16 3 males under 16 4 females 4 slaves The male over sixteen was, undoubtedly, William Tyler, the head of the household. His wife, if she were then living, would be one of the females. He, then, had six children in 1790. Allowing about twenty years for the births of these six children and assuming that he married at about age twenty, he was born around 1750. Who was this William Tyler? The census of 1800 shows only nine Tylers as heads of households in South Carolina and only one of these has the name William. He is shown as living in the Abbeville District with the following family composition: 1 male over 45 1 female 16-26 1 female over 45 1 slave Since only one William Tyler is recorded in both the 1790 and 1800 censuses in South Carolina, it is reasonable to believe that the two references are to the same person. Proceeding on this assumption, the William Tyler of the 1790 census and his wife could not have been born later than 1755 since the 1800 census shows them as being over age forty-five at that time. It is, therefore, probably correct to assume that they were born somewhere between 1740 and 1750. The 1810 census shows a William Tyler, Jr., and a William Tyler, Sr., as heads of households and living in Orangeburg District, South Carolina. Their family compositions are as follows: William Tyler, Jr. 1 male under 10 1 male under 45 1 female under 10 1 female under 16 1 female under 26 William Tyler, Sr. 2 males under 16 1 male over 45 1 female under 10 This William Tyler, Sr., is, undoubtedly, the William Tyler of both the 1790 and 1800 censuses. His wife was probably dead by 1810, since the only female shown was under ten years old in that year. William Tyler, Jr., was his son. How is he further identified? From reliable sources of information, wholly independent of the censuses, it is known that a William Tyler was born in the Orangeburg District October 24, 1780. His wife, Ann, was born May 18, 1789. They had three children born to them prior to 1810. (See Section 3 for more information.) A girl, named Martha, was born in 1804. William, a son, was born in 1807. Another son, John Jefferson, was born in 1809. William, however, died in 1810. This leaves only two children to be accounted for in the 1810 census; one, a girl and the other, a boy. Their family, then, in 1810 consisted of the following members: William father age 30 Ann wife age 21 Martha girl age 6 John Jefferson boy age 1 When this family composition is compared with that of the family of William Tyler, Jr., of the 1810 census, it is seen that they are identical with the exception of the female who is shown as being under sixteen years of age. She could have been a relative who happened to be living with William and Ann when the 1810 census was taken. Hence, the only reasonable conclusion to reach is that the William Tyler of the 1810 census is the William Tyler who was born in 1780. The above facts and information are briefly summarized by stating that the William Tyler who was born somewhere between 1740 and 1750 was the father of the William Tyler who was born in 1780 and who is well-known in the Tyler ancestral line. It may be of interest to note that the 1790 census shows William Tyler as having in his household three males under sixteen years old. The William Tyler who was born in 1780 was then ten years old and was one of these three males, The date of the death of William Tyler, Sr., is not known. He was certainly living in 1810. Since it is believed that Willow Swamp Baptist Church was founded in his home (see part III), it would be reasonable to believe that he is buried in the cemetery of this church. If this is true, there is no monument to his grave. Before closing this section on the early days of the Tyler family, there is reproduced below a copy of a legal document which may be of some interest: South Carolina Pursuant to an Act of the General Assembly. passed the 12th day of March, 1783, we the Commissioners of the Treasury, have this day delivered to William Tyler this our Indented Certificate for the sum of seventeen pounds, eighr shillings for eight head of cattle. The said William Tyler. his executors, Administrators, or Assigns will be entitled to receive the above sum on the [indistinct writing] day with interest at the rate of seven per centum from the first day of April, one thousand seven hundred and eighty three. This William Tyler was, undoubtedly, the William Tyler of the 1790 census and the father of the William Tyler who was born in 1780. 2. William and Ann Tyler. As stated in the above section, William Tyler was born October 24, 1780. From census reports already cited. he was, undoubtedly, born in what is now Orangeburg County and lived his entire life there. He had the name of his father who was born sometime between 1740 and 1750. For this reason, he is sometimes referred to in the records as William Tyler, Jr. In 1806, a William Tyler (believed to be William Tyler, Sr., who was born between 1740 and 1750) deeded some property to William Tyler, Jr. A copy of this deed is reproduced below: State of South Carolina Orangeburg District Know all men by these presents that I, William Tyler, of rhe aforesaid District in consideration of the sum of one hundred dollars to me paid by William Tyler. Jr. of the state aforesaid, have granted and sold and released and by these presents do grant, bargain and sell and release unto the said William Tyler, Jr. all that plantation or tracr of land containing one hundred and fifty acres, it being and lying in the fork of Edisto [writing indistinct] by the name of Willow Swamp [writing indistinct] and appurtenances to said premises belonging or in any wise incident or appertaining to have and to hold all and singular premises before mentioned unto the said William Tyler, Jr., his heirs and assigns Forever and l hereby bind myself, my heirs, executors, administrators to Warrant and Forever defend all and singular said premises unto the said William Tyler, Jr. his heirs and assigns against myself and my heirs and against every person whomsoever lawfully claiming or to claim the same or any part thereof. Witness my hand and seal this the Twenty-seventh day of May, one thousand, eight hundred and six and in the thirty-first year of the independence of the United States of America. The wife of William Tyler was named Ann who was born May 18, 1789. They were married December 15, 1802. Nothing further is known about her except that she lived with her son, Levy Silvester Tyler, after the death of her husband. (See Section 4.) William Tyler died August 16, 1842, and is buried in the cemetery of Willow Swamp Baptist Church, near Norway, South Carolina. The monument to his grave carries the oldest birth date of all those in this cemetery. His wife, Ann, died, June 10, 1865, and is buried in the space beside her husband. 3. The Children of William and Ann Tyler. Listed below are the names of the sons and daughters of William and Ann Tyler with the dates of their births and deaths: Martha Tyler. Martha Tyler was born November 7. 1804, and died January 21, 18l6. William Tyler. William Tyler was born January 19, 1807. and died September 17, 1810. John Jefferson Tyler. John Jefferson Tyler was born February 27, 1809, and died January 20. 1816. May Ann Elizabeth Caroline Tyler. Mary Ann Elizabeth Caroline Tyler was born January 12, 1812, and died January 16, 1816. Rebecca Tyler. Rebecca Tyler was born August 30, 1815. and died October 30, 1815. James Head Tyler. James Head Tyler was born November 24, 1816, and died August 29, 1817. Joshua Tyler. Joshua Tyler was born November 18, 1818. The date of his death is not known. He married Ann Jane Corbitt September 9, 1838. ' Thomas Bennett Tyler. Thomas Bennett Tyler was born August 27, 1820. The date of his death is not known. Levy Silvester Tyler. Levy Silvester Tyler was born December 8, 1823, and died June 6, l864. (See Section 4.) Darling Swift Tyler. Darling Swift Tyler was born February 16, 1826. The date of his death is not known. Anner Rebecca Tyler. Anner Rebecca Tyler was born August 31, 1828. The date of her death is not known. 4. Levy Silvester Tyler. It is this particular son of William and Ann Tyler with whom we are concerned in this history of the Williams and Tyler families. There is some confusion about the date of his birth and the spelling of his name. In an old family Bible, his name is given as Levy Silvester at the place where his birth is recorded, but at the place where his death is recorded it is given as Levi Silveston. A son of his, who presumably was named after his father, spelled it Levi Sylvester. (See Section 6.) This same Bible records his birth as December 8, 1823, but it is recorded on the monument at his grave as September 6, 1823. Levy (or Levi) Silvester Tyler was born in Willow Township, Orangeburg County, South Carolina; perhaps, near the town of Norway. On February 14, 1856, he married Catherine Thomas. They lived during their eight years of married life near the tracks of the Seaboard Coast Line railroad and about a mile and a half south of Norway. The census of 1860 shows him living in Orangeburg County. His name appears in this census as Levi. It also records that he was a farmer with real estate valued at four thousand dollars and personal property valued at eighteen thousand dollars. The writer questions the accuracy of this last figure. When the census taker wrote '' 18000,'' he probably intended to write ''1800,'' for it would be unreasonable to assume that Levi had personal property with a value of eighteen thousand dollars when his real estate holdings were valued at only four thousand dollars. According to this census, Levi's family in 1860 consisted of the following: Catherine wife age 26 Daniel S. son age 3 John son age 1 Ann mother age 71 This family composition in 1860 checks accurately with information from other independent sources. The last person mentioned, Ann, was the widow of William Tyler. She probably began living with her son, Levi, after the death of her husband, in 1842. Levi Silvester Tyler was a soldier in the Confederate Army in the War Between The States. Reproduced below are copies of two letters which he wrote about three months before he died. March 14, 1864 Dear Wife, I am getting on tolerable well. I spit up a little blood yet and my back hurts me at times. There is a stirup in camp, the company is to be reduced today. 16 men had to leave. I have applied for a transfer today. It will he several days before I know whether it will be granted or not. l will see Rickenbaker tonight about it. If Jim Reed goes to Augusta, you could send $450 by him to get bond. Be sure to send the one hundred dollar bill. What you keep let it be $70. Bills dated in August 1863. The men have got no meat for 3 days last week. Sone are living on bread and water. I am sorry for them, but cannot help or I would soon be out. Your affectionate husband, Levi S. Tyler Mrs. C. Tyler Tell Dan I can hear the cannon firing now. (Writer's comments: Jim Reed must have been some family friend. Dan was Levi's son. He was then eight years old. His picture appears at the front of this book as Daniel Swift Tyler.) March 27, 1864 Dear son, I am well this morning except my back and hope this will Find you all well. Tell your mother I have received my transfer and will get a furlough For 10 or 16 days to bring my horse home and then we will go fishing. You must be a good boy and take care of Ann and Levi. Ask Ann if she Feeds her gramma's rabbits yet. I hear old R. Walker is dead. But you did write to me about it. It is said that our company will leave next Wednesday, but I do not think they will leave so soon. General Wade refuses to give up the men till he receives an order from Beauregard. Tell mother to save me some supper Wednesday night. I might get home sooner. Save me some eggs. I will come up horse back. Your affectionate Father. Levi S. Tyler. Master Dan Tyler. (Writer's comments: The son to whom this letter is addressed was Dan, who is identified in the first letter above. Ann was the writer's mother whose picture appears in the front of this book as Catherine Annie Elizabeth Tyler Williams. She was about four years old when her father wrote this letter. Levi was another son of Levi, the soldier. He was only two years old when this letter was written.) (See Section 6.) While home on furlough during the latter part of the war, Levi Silvester became ill. In spite of this illness, when his furlough was about to expire he persisted on returning to his post of duty, near Charleston, South Carolina. A third letter is reproduced below which is concerned with his illness: Battery Palmer Saint Andrews Parish June 7, 1864. Mrs. L. S. Tyler Dear Madam: I am sorry to inform you of the illness of your husband, Mr. Tyler, and would beg of you to come as soon as you possibly can for I look on him as a very ill man. Cap't. Rickenbaker's Company had been ordered from this post. But your husband is here at this hospital. I have sent tor his brother, Mr. W. S. Tyler, and expect him this afternoon on the train from Adams Run. I do not wish to alarm you, but hardly think he will be alive when you get here. But there is one consolation and that is to put our trust in God, who doeth all things for the best. He is the only one now that we can look to for his recovery. I have done all that could be done for him here and I promised his brother that if he got worse to let you know and would have done so betore now, but l heard that they had written for you, and I waited. Not seeing you on the train this morning I thought best to write myself. Permit me to remain, Dear Madam, although a stranger to you, but a friend to your sick husband, Your Obedient Servant, Francis S. Curtis Hospital Steward Family records show that Levi died June 6. 1864. The letter above, however, indicates that his death could nor have occurred before the next day, or June 7, 1864. Regardless of which date is correct, his wife, Catherine, probably did not arrive before his death. His body was returned home and is buried in the cemetery of Willow Swamp Baptist Church, near Norway, South Carolina. The letter above refers to a W.S. TyIer as a brother of Levi Silvester. No such brother is listed in Section 3. Could this W.S. Tyler have been Darling Swift Tyler who was born February 16, 1826? This is possible. The writer of the letter could have had his initials confused. 5. Catherine Thomas Tyler. Catherine Thomas Tyler, wife or Levi Silvester Tyler, was born in Barnwell County, near Blackville, South Carolina, March 19, 1834. After five years of widowhood, she married Dearal Rowell who died in April of 1877, and is buried in the cemetery of Willow Swamp Baptist Church. After the death of her second husband, Catherine continued to live at her old home place for a while, but later moved to Norway, South Carolina, where she was living at the time of her death, March 17, 1904. She is buried in the cemetery of Willow Swamp Baptist Church. It is believed that the father of Catherine Thomas was Reuben Thomas and that her mother was named Elizabeth. Nothing further is known about them. Before closing this section on Catherine Thomas Tyler, a letter and a legal document are reproduced below, both involving Catherine and showing something about conditions at the times the slaves were freed: Orangeburg, South Carolina July 26, 1865 Mrs. Catherine Tyler: Madam, you are hereby required to make a bargain with the freed people upon your plantation. You will find it to your interest to make them a fair offer as compensation for what has been done this year. If a bargain is not soon made your crops will be taken charge of for the benefit of those who planted them. I am, Madam, Respt. by H. W. Wood, 1st.Lt. 112d. U.S. T.T. Two children of Levi Silvester and Catherine Thomas Tyler are of especial interest in this history of the Williams and Tyler families; namely, Catherine Annie Elizabeth Tyler and Daniel Swift Tyler. See reference to Catherine Annie Elizabeth Tyler in Part I, Section 8. Daniel Swift Tyler was born December 30, 1856, near Norway, South Carolina, and lived his entire life in this area. While farming was his main business, he served as magistrate in Willow District, Orangeburg County, for a number of years. His popularity with the people and their confidence in him are shown by the fact that he seldom had any opposition when running for this political office. He lived a quiet and unassuming life. He was treasurer of Willow Swamp Baprist church for many years and was a deacon in this church at the time of his death. Perhaps, the political office which he held should be called by its other name -- that of Justice of the Peace -- for he believed in peace and, undoubtedly, settled out of court the great majority of cases which came before him for trial. Daniel Swift Tyler married Janie Williams February 24, 1895. (See Part I, Section 6.) Janie was born in Aiken County, near Wagener, South Carolina. Although she never attended an institution of higher learning and, perhaps, did not go very far in the public schools of her day, Janie Williams Tyler was a woman of culture. She was a real student of the Bible and enjoyed nothing more in life than to discuss it with those who were interested. Her life was devoted to her family and her church. At the death of her sister, Mary Etta Williams Spradley (See Part I, Section 6), she and her husband took into their home her sister's two children, Myrtis, age four, and Gertrude (Mollie), age two, and reared both to womanhood. Daniel Swift Tyler died November 12, 1927, and his wife, Janie, August 25, 1948. They are buried in the cemetery of Willow Swamp Baptist Church, where they were members for many years. 9. HOUSES OF WORSHIP Willow Swamp Baptist Church PART III WILLOW SWAMP BAPTIST CHURCH Since Willow Swamp Baptist Church has played such an important role in the lives of the Williams and Tyler families, it was thought proper to include something about this church in this history of the two families. Among the effects of Janie Williams Tyler (see picture in front of book), found after her death in 1948, is a document with the title, "Tyler." The name of the compiler of the document is not known, but a reading of the minutes of Willow Swamp, in the early days of its history, shows that the author of ''Tyler'' had access to these minutes. According to this document, Willow Swamp Baptist Church was constituted August 10, 1805, in the home of William Tyler. The constituting, ceremony seems to have been in charge of James Sweat and Issac Dubosque. They are referred to in the conference minutes of August 10, 1805, as the "Presbytery.'' These same minutes list Richard Simmons and Charles Felder as the first deacons of the new church, and Arial Mixon as its first clerk. The list of charter members below contains the names of William Tyler, Jr., and William Tyler, Sr. (See Part II, section I.) Which one of these was the one who offered his home for the constituting of the church? The writer believes that it was William Tyler, Sr. Here as a quotation from this document: ''The Baptist Church of Christ at Dean Swamp (Stare of South Carolina, Orangeburg County) in conference 1st of June, 1805, dismissed all and singular members whose names are under enrolled. to be constituted a church at William Tyler's on Willow Swamp and when constituted are dismissed from us in full fellowship by order of the church.'' This was signed by Josiah Keadle, Church Clerk. Thus, Willow Swamp Baptist Church came out of Dean Swamp Baptist Church. The charter members of the new church are listed below: Richard Simmons Hannah Young Elizabeth Sandifer Sarah Mixon WILLIAM TYLE, JR. Ann Guess Charles Felder Ansley Brooks Levi Lee Keziah Ballard Henry Tyler Sarah Sanders John Holman, Jr. Isabella Hutto Daniel McDaniel Mary Brown Jane Tyler Sabra Sanders John Ballard Sarah Felder Mary Tyler Arial Mixon Martha Tyler Martha Hughes Ann Simmons John Holman, Sr. Elizabeth Holman Ann Tyler* WILLIAM TYLER, SR. Joseph Brown Sarah Hughs Elizabeth Tyler *This was probably the wife of William Tyler, Jr. Since she was born in 1789, she would have been sixteen years old when the church was founded. Some extracts from the minutes of the church in its early days may be of interest. "Conference January 10, 1807, William Tyler, Jr. confessed that he had fell into a transgression for 'giting' into a dispute and 'fiting.' He was forgiven." Since they had William Tyler, Jr., "up in the church" for misbehavior, this could be some small reason tor believing that the church was not founded in his home, but in his father's. Other extracts from the minutes follow. "November 17, 1810. Brothers Matheny and Richardson came from Springtown Baptist Church with a letter desiring the church to grant them fellowship and membership." "Conference in April 1813. Ordinance of feet washing was debated. question being whether it should be done in public or private meeting. Private decided." "Lavinia Tyler joined Willow Swamp in 1819." "Elisha Tyler was baptized in 1826." "Joshua, Mahala and Philip Tyler were received in 1833." "Rachel Tyler received in 1838, Margaret F. and Anna Tyler in 1841." "A page was inscribed June 3, 1851 in a last tribute of respect of our beloved brother Elisha Tyler." "John Shannon TyIer joined October 31, 1852. Died 1854." The document states that Elisha Tyler was a brother of William Tyler, Jr. He was, therefore, another son of William Tyler, Sr. Elisha is recorded as having been born April 4, 1794. He died, according to the minutes, June 3, 1851. These excerpts from the church's minutes, and others which are not reproduced here, show that the Tylers were very prominent in Willow Swamp Baptist Church during the early days of its history. This unknown writer of the document, "Tyler," records that "the Willow Swamp Bible was burned by the Yankees--they used it to make a fire under an oven to roast chicken in Thomas Taylor's front yard." Where the early members of Willow Swamp held church services after the church was constituted is now known. They could have, for a time, used the home of William Tyler, Sr., where the church had its beginning. According to information handed down through the years, the first house of worship was a one-room structure located near Willow Swamp Creek about a mile west of the present sanctuary. How long this building was used is not known, but some time prior to 1865, lumber was assembled to build another house of worship in what is now the cemetery across the road from the present sanctuary. But before the building could be erected, the lumber was burned by the "enemy in February 1865." This is recorded in the minutes of the church under date of February 6, 1866. They state, "The clerk stated that the note given by the building committee for the lumber burned by the enemy in February, 1865, was not paid. On motion, Brother Pete McMichael was appointed to see Mr. John Kennedy who holds the note and request him to indulge the committee and try to get him to deduct something on account of the loss. Resolved that Brother Reed be instructed to collect what he can on the subscriptions given for building the church." (Note: The word "enemy" in the minutes means the Union soldiers under General Sherman. This was the time of his invasion of the South.) Apparently, ''Brother Reed'' did not have much success, for a number of years went by before another sanctuary was built. Contributing to the difficulty of erecting another house of worship were the dark days of the Reconstruction Period following the Confederate War. Where, then, did the members meet for worship during these days? The answer is found in the minutes of the church under date of April 14, 1866. There, we read, "Resolved that the clerk of the church be authorized to borrow fourteen dollars and pay the same to Mr. W. L. Riley, it being the balance due him for building the shelter to worship under." The writer remembers hearing his mother talk about a "brush arbor" which was used as a place of worship immediately after the war. The "brush arbor" and "shelter," undoubtedly, refer to the same thing. It is believed to have been located about where the present brick sanctuary stands. The nature of this improvised and temporary structure will have to be left to one's imagination. A new house of worship was finally erected, probably sometime between 1870 and 1875. It was a one-room wooden structure with a narrow front porch and adorned with four square columns. It was located near the center of the church's cemetery which is across the road from the present brick building. A picture of this old building is shown with this section, along with the picture of the church's present house of worship which replaced the old building in 1920. The minutes of a conference, held by the church on November 1, 1883, may be of some interest to the Williams and Tyler families. There, we read, "Resolved that Brother B.B. Wiliams and Brother D.S. Tyler be appointed to help the treasurer to collect the pastor's salary and to get all they could by the next meeting." Willow Swamp Baptist Church is now one hundred and seventy-five years old. Starting with a membership of thirty-two in 1805 and with no physical facilities, today it has two hundred and sixty members and a house of worship which is a credit to any rural community. It provides for its members a program equal to that of many larger Baptist churches. The influence of Willow Swamp Baptist Church, over the long years, has not only been a blessing to the Williams and Tyler families, but to all who have become a part of its fellowship. Conclusion The writer will feel that he has been amply repaid for the time which he has spent in gathering the material for this book and writing it if it serves, not only to bind our present families closer together, but inspires those who shall come after us to keep alive the family ties. We have a heritage of which we can be justly proud. None of our ancestors achieved greatness as the world measures greatness, but they were people of honor and integrity and, above all, a people who lived close to God and His church. The material possessions, whether great or small, which we may pass on to future generations, will not be important, for such things endure only for a little while. But this heritage of honor, integrity, and simple trust in God, which we have received from those who have gone on, is of enduring value. Let us pass it on unsullied, and, as we of this generation, as well as our descendants, build our homes may we never forget the profound truth of the psalmist when he wrote long ago, "Except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it." On page 49, second paragraph from the bottom, it is stated that she was born in Aiken County, near Wagener, South Carolina. Her father, Isaiah, was living in Orangeburg County in 1860 and 1870. He is not shown as living in Aiken County until 1880. (See page 6.) Janie was born in 1865. Her name appears in the household of Isaiah in the 1870 census. This has caused some to believe that she was born in Orangeburg County. The writer believes that at the time of her birth in 1865, her father, Isaiah, was living in what was then Orangeburg County. Later, the boundary line between Aiken and Orangeburg Counties was shifted so as to make the place of her birth in what is now Aiken County. 11CC Line one.
