Passing of a friend

We drove down to Richmond last weekend for Martha Mabey’s memorial service. She was a family friend of decades and I’m sorry that she’s gone now.

But it was not unexpected to her or her family and friends.

She did all she could to make the arrangements ahead of time to make it easy on her family, and to exert her sense of style on the service.

Because her life (and her husband’s) was so intertwined with my parents lives, Loren, Susan, Steve and Helen also traveled to Richmond for the service.

That gave us time to play Catan, enjoy several nice meals, and tour the James River rapids Steve and I grew up on (and Loren had some occasion to enjoy).

It also gave us time to remember Martha and Gordon and all the shared memories with our parents.

Jessica, her daughter, seems to be handling it well and has lots of support in Richmond.

One thing Martha did was pen a book of Contacts about her friends and what they meant to her. That included a a page about my mom, which I’ve added to related information about her.

And if you’d like to know a little more about Martha Mabey, she wrote THE LAST DOCTOR IN AMERICA about coming to terms with a life threatening medical issue. Something which clearly helped to motivate her to plan for her end of life.

I like to think she would have enjoyed the serendipity of running into a parade in Ashland on our way home. And of the flexibility of the organizers to deal with a parade route cut in two by train tracks.

As she and Gordon lived in Ashland for a while, they may have enjoyed the parade (and the trains) years ago.

Sam Playing Robert’s Christmas Guitar

After the memorial service for my dad, and after visiting with family and friends at Steve, Helen and Aaron’s house, the DC and Atlanta gangs headed to Seven Devils for the night. Sam picked up Robert’s Christmas guitar just to exercise his fingers. It was a very pleasant way to unwind after a very tough day. There are a few more photos and a brief description of those couple weeks here.

Loren Williams: 1927 - 2009

We bid farewall to my dad at about 3AM this morning. It was not unexpected: he’d been fighting lymphoma for about 18 months. Wyman Loren Williams, Jr.

Our Seattle Trip

While the reason for the trip to Seattle was very sad, we did have enough time to take in a few sites and Robert met lots of family he had not met before.

And the nice folks from Delta invited Robert to take a look around the cockpit as we boarded in Atlanta — that was pretty cool. There are many more photos from Robert’s first trip to Seattle.

Memorial Gathering

We just came back from a quick trip to Seattle for Lindsay’s memorial. It was a lovely event for a very sad occasion. Lots of her friends had a chance to remember what all she meant to them and how she had impacted their lives. Some stories were shared by her family and friends; there was a very nice slide show that spanned her (too short) life, and there was time for people to reconnect and reminisce. We will all miss her.

It is with profound sadness that I have to report that Lindsay Brown, (wife of my brother David and mother of my wonderful nephew Ian) passed away today, Sunday Aug. 31st around 5:00pm.

She died at home, resting comfortably in her living-room overlooking Seattle and surrounded by family. She was diagnosed with Adenocarcinoma June 30th and passed away eight weeks later. Her family and her community will miss her very much.

Thank you very much to everyone who has supported us during this time. We are very grateful. (Especially Robert who got some extra time to play with his buddies this past week while I went out to Seattle.) Thanks again.

Fun trip for a sad reason

We took a quick trip down to Richmond for a memorial service last week. Since we were bringing Robert along, we left a bit early and visited Maymont on our way (as Sarah noted earlier). Here’s their new-to-me exhibit on the aquatic life in the James River. More photos in Robert’s section
