I’ve been going back in the blog and adding topic tags to older entries. It’s been a fun project that I’m a bit over halfway through. But I realized in the process that it’s been a while since Panzer has graced the screen here.

And so, Panzer in his curled up napping pose.

Clearly it’s time to show him off again.

And this offers proof he is awake and alert sometimes between naps.

He was sitting on the table where he often gets brushed.

And mostly patiently waiting for it to be dinner time.

And generally just looking handsome.

So, clearly, a photo is needed.

Sad end to the day

The day started pretty well…

After finishing up some household chores, I popped the canoe on car and headed towards Angler’s Inn.

The traffic on the American Legion bridge was crazy bad and I made a huge detour south to go across Chain bridge.

At that point I was starting to think about just heading back home.

But I made the crazy detour and by the time I got to Anglers, there were parking places and I was ready to get on river.

It was cloudy and cool.

But for December, it was great!

There were a few other folks out but not many and so it felt like I had the river to myself.

While the water level was low, I had fun.

A bit of surfing across the Maryland chute, and a bit of surfing across the Virginia chute.

And I was almost able to make the attainment up the center channel. Almost, but not quite.

Then, when I got home Sarah came out to tell me that Pinker was not doing well.

She’s been ill but hanging on for months; however, the last couple days, she’s stopped coming upstairs and purring.

Sarah said she was just sitting all day with her head pointed to the wall.

It was time to say goodbye. A very sad trip to the vets office. But it was nice for all of us to be able to go.

Robert just held her in the back seat (and took this final photo).

She’s been with us for just over a decade and she will be sadly missed.

I know her brother misses her as well. We’ll be sad for while, but our lives were made better by having her a part of the last decade; we’ll remember all the fun and joy she brought and enjoy her brother’s company.

Now they are well established cats.

And less interested in sitting for a portrait.

The lights and attention seemed to worry them; which I’m OK with.

Christmas Tree

We walked over to our favorite tree lot yesterday.

Not quite as planned, it was no longer light as we had some kitty calming to do before we could go: Panzer had found a paper bag and…

Trapped himself inside it. There was a brown, paper bag streak racing through the house; downstairs, then up.

We found some of the bag. But there was still a rope handle wrapped around him as he was hiding under Robert’s bed.

We got him out with treats, checked him over, gave him some dinner, then went to get the tree.

So the decorations went up today.

I think we did well.

And I think Panzer agreed.

Robert is working on replacing the Christmas train around the tree with a Christmas Hot Wheels track.

But he’s still working on getting the curve and loop to work as he’d like.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

And we can barely wait…

Christmas cats…

Pinker and Panzer are very happy to have their annual tree nest back. New this year, we put the tree in the addition rather than the dining room as we’ve done in years past.

It seems to fit well and I expect to add a couple more photos before the big day.

Easter

We have a new technique for our eggs this year: Robert and Sarah found Painters, paint pens.

Clearly a step beyond our previously adventurous rubber band wrapping. Sarah’s flowers are great!

They were a very cool addition.

Perhaps not completely traditional, but fun nonetheless.

And helps to make it worthwhile to really stretch to get that last egg hidden by the Easter Bunny.

It promises to be a hot Easter this year (something we should be getting more used to I suppose).

We’re finishing up our Tax Day letter (check back on Tuesday, thanks to DC’s Emancipation Day holiday). Then we have a couple outdoor excursions planned.

With our passports expiring, we’re getting ready to renew. And that means new passport photos.

I don’t think these will fly…

Three snoozing kitties sharing the couch with Sarah. I don’t know if they are getting along better or if Zip Drive is just too tired to run away anymore. But they all seemed perfectly happy the other night.

Kitty Portraits

Since I had the lights and camera out for Robert’s school art, it only made sense to try to entice the kitties into portraits.

They put up with it well. Panzer even jumped up to join Pinker in her session. The two-shot turned out better than either of the individual photos.

It may have helped that they had been fed dinner by this time.

A Little Help Reading the Paper

Not much more to say really. Sarah back from work and dinner and really just wanting to relax and read the paper. Panzer not having any of it. Clearly his paper and he’s going to be doing the reading.

At least according to Zip Drive Williams — Panzer was napping in his basket, leaving Zip Drive to take the place of honor under the Christmas tree. It does seem very odd for the first day of winter to have the door open to let the 70 degree air in, but no compliants from us.

Two Cute!

Pinker (asleep) and Panzer (not asleep) enjoying the first fire of the season. We’ve had colder days so far, but this was a nice, mellow, cool Saturday; perfect for a a fire. Now I need to go breath some more life into the flames…

Power Outage

The power went out in the big storm “Derecho” Friday night about 11pm and was out until about 7pm Sunday night. Temps in the low triple digits was not the best time to be without power. Sunday morning we dragged a really long extension cord several houses down to Steve and Rachel’s — they have a generator. And Julia came by for a visit (until she got bored watching Robert play computer games).

The power got us fans and a working fridge — too late to save the contents — that was enough to keep our spirits up and determination to camp out one more night to see if the power would make it back on.

And it did :)

Of course, the DSL is still out — we’ll work on that tomorrow…

Sarah says it’s my fault because I put him up there one time. But I think Panzer would have figured out he could jump up at some point. Now he seems to be waiting there for us to get home — I think he likes leering down on all his imagined minions…

A boy and his cat

Panzer decided to keep Robert company the other night. This is interesting because for a couple days before this, he was nibbling on Robert’s toes and waking him up early. So Robert asked us to make sure the door was closed to his room. Eventually Panzer came out on his own and we closed the door to keep him out.

Clearly Robert got his wish: Kitties who like him. Zip Drive has been skittish around Robert ever since we brought the small man-cub home. Panzer and Pinker, however, have been a different story…

Take one Hex Bug Nano, some duct tape and several boxes and you have hours of entertainment for both Robert and the kitties…
It makes such a great sound crawling along the boxes; the kitties really want to track it down.

Zip Drive

Panzer, the newish kitten, may chase him around, but Zip Drive still gets his favorite spot under the tree. With the kittens, we’re having to keep presents in other boxes to prevent the curious and clawed from taking away some of the surprise…

Christmas Tree Trimming

Panzer’s first Christmas tree — and of course he had to play. Pinker was interested as well, but she got bored sooner. Zip Drive ended up in “his” spot under the tree. There are a couple more photos in Robert’s section.

Friday Cat Blogging

I’m not much of a Friday cat blogger but couldn’t help snapping a quick photo of the basket under the chair. I guess Robert and Andrew wore them out when Andrew came over after school today. They only opened their eyes when I leaned in with my cell phone camera.

Pinker is perfectly capable of looking very regal if she wants to. As she does here.

Zip Drive snoozing on the porch on a lovely morning. The kitties have not found the porch to be quite as inviting as Zip Drive so it’s nice spot for him to get away from them.

Cute Kitties

I carried them down to the kitchen for a final dinner of the evening and after they were through, I carried them back up. Not that they have trouble with the stairs, but I didn’t want to leave the extra food out, and after carrying them down, I felt it was only fair to carry them back up.

10 minutes later, there they were back in the kitchen keeping me company. And 5 minutes after that, asleep on the chair.

I’ve got to get a nice photo of Zip Drive to put here so he’s not too jealous. That’s Panzer on the left — a few minutes after this picture he was sitting up, then his eyes closed and he waved a little bit and I thought he was going to fall over asleep, but he stretched himself back out. And on the right is Pinker — she’s just been asleep.

Robert named him Panzer because he’s a boy and he couldn’t name a boy kitten “Pinker.” There are sure to be more photos of the new additions to the family

As promised, more kitty pictures. This is Pinker, so named by Robert because he likes pink and adds “er” to his pet names (the caterpillar he found became fuzzer).

Kittens!!!

Pinker and Panzer have arrived. The new kittens came home this afternoon; there was just a little bit of hissing with Zip Drive. We’re hoping that they will all become friends in a week or two.

For now, Robert is reading them a bedtime story while they nap in the new kitty condo. Zip Drive is no where to been seen. They’ll have seperate rooms for a while yet.

There may be a few cute kitten photos here over the next couple of weeks…
