We had a great, but much too short trip to Atlanta to Celebrate Loren’s 70th B-Day! It was great fun (less the traffic on the road there and back).

Extra bonus prize: a morning visit with Kate, Sean, Margo and Adeline!

Spring Break Burger Trip

We’re back safe and sound from our Spring Break jaunt to Decatur and have more photos in the vacations section.

Train to Hotlanta

Robert is on spring break this week and we decided to take the train to Atlanta. Well… I decided and convinced Robert — though it did not take too much convincing.

We went for seats rather than the expensive but more comfortable sleeper car. It takes a bit longer than driving and is cheaper and in many ways easier than flying. And no seatbelts (more comfortable, and generally seems pretty safe) makes it possible to get up and walk around.

No need to stop for dinner: they have a cafe and a dining car on the train. It’s vacation so we can get away with less than the healhiest meals (Robert did eat a burger to go along with his soda and cookies).

The foot rest wouldn’t stay up so Robert slept sideways much of the night. Eventually, I flipped up the footrest in the “occupied” sign and Robert tucked himself into the nest that made.

Lights out was a little late and he had trouble getting to sleep until lights out. (And even with the lights out, the “night lights” were kind of bright.)

An adventure it is. We’ll see what the trip back brings (it leaves a little later still so we’ll probably dine before the train or bring something with us).

The reason for heading to Atlanta is to provide an extra set of eyes for my mom while my brother and sister-in-law are gallivanting around the world. Extra bonus points, we got to see cousin Sam (W) and Omar before they headed back to Nashville. And Sally is here so we get to hang with her (and maybe try some of the ice cream where she works).

Robert was happy to join in Balloon Ball at the assisted living facility while we visited with my mom.

Thanksgiving in Atlanta

Christmas

Christmas was another fun time to catch up with family and friends scattered across the country. We enjoyed lots of good conversation and meals; pretty good weather and no traffic issues while on the road. More photos in the vacations section.

Satay

Robert enjoyed cooking (well, heating) his own satay while we were out with the Williams’ clan at Siam in Decatur. We’re having a great time catching up with everyone and Robert and I have come to really like Settlers of Catan after a couple games here. Well … I just won so maybe I’m liking it more than Robert.

I took a quick flight down to Atlanta for my mom’s 80th birthday. We had a small party for her and I think she really enjoyed it. I know she really liked the cake Susan made — her expression and loving look were great.

The cards were fun for her to read, and she also truly enjoyed getting a nicely illustrated Mother Goose book. She seems to be on a mostly even keel and it looks like there may be a room opening up in a nicer facility, still very close to the Decatur Williamses.

Atlanta Christmas trip

On our way back from Atlanta, we stopped in Richmond for to spend the night at the Jefferson Hotel — we had to take a couple pictures before we left. There are lots more photos of out Atlanta trip (which included a graduation party for Sam and Oscar — Way To Go Guys) in the vacations section.

While in Atlanta, we also checked out the Aquarium. It was lots of fun and really interesting. They have a very big (currently the biggest) tank. More photos in the vacations section.

Back from Atlanta

Robert and I made a quick trip down to check on my mom. Loren took us to the Upper Hooch (Chattahoochee River) on Saturday to join up with Bob and Lynn Gaar. Robert said his favorite part was when we wiped out in the middle ledge of triple ledges. He had put on his helmet by then :)

We drove down to Atlanta for Christmas this year. The drive was long but probably not a whole lot longer than it would take to fly if you add in the getting to and from the airport on time (and the strong potential for delays on our trip back as the storm came up the coast on the 26th). Thanks for the final round of birthday parties. It was very festive thanks to Susan’s planning. Two cakes and a couple of renditions of “Happy Birthday to You” were sung to Robert & Uncle in law Chuck (July 22nd), to Steve (July 26th) and Loren (July 31.)

Birthday parties winding down

We just came back from a lighting fast visit to Atlanta. We were able to help swap permanent furniture in for Smom’s temporary furniture in her new apartment.

And we celebrated all the family July birthdays: Robert, Robert’s uncle-in-law Chuck, Steve and Loren. Loren enjoyed reading Happy Birthday to You by Dr. Suess to Robert (and the rest of us enjoyed listening in). This is the copy that came from David’s Elementary School in Augusta; the same school where Smom worked in the library — that might explain how this library book ended up in the family.

And few things can be as artistically inspiring as a visit to Loren and Susan’s house. Just check out the tomato collection that greeted us on the table when we arrived. That, and the cool art box in “his room” inspired Robert to paint some water colors.

While it was a short trip, we had a chance to catch up with Steve, Helen and Aaron, play in the tree house, eat too much (including two birthday cakes — one dairy and one dairy-free) and had a great afternoon at the pool. The pool party’s high point was Robert’s first (and second, third, fourth…) jump off the diving board in the deep end. Including, by the end of the evening, several cannonballs!!!

Lots of fun to be had by all, especially the quartet of birthday boys.
