Robert connecting on a pitch from coach JT. The Hillcats won another game today with good hitting and good fielding. I don’t know if we’ll follow coach JT to kids pitch next year or if we get one more year of coach pitch — which has been great. One more game on Monday, if the weather holds.

Baseball

It was a hot, 94 degree day for baseball today. The kids did a good job drinking lots of water and had a good time. This is Robert’s hit in the first inning.

The Hillcats are doing well this year — there have been some questions of scoring (there are only supposed to be 4 runs max per inning, but if Julian hits a bases loaded grans slam after there have already been three runs it’s hard not to give him credit) — they have not lost a game.

Robert coming in to first base in the Hillcats vs. the Silver Hawks game. After watching the Nats play last weekend, he was ready to try to steal second — the first base coach called him back, pointing out that’s a major league move, not a coach pitch move.

It’s clearly springtime: baseball is back. This evening was the second game for the Hillcats. That shadow in the foreground is Robert taking off after a ball while covering 3rd base. It’s great to watch how much the kids have gotten better. After I put my camera down, Robert had a great pop fly catch.

Robert played his last baseball game of the season for the Hillcats yesterday. I think coach JT did a really great job with the kids this year. They were hitting well and making some great plays.

We had such a busy weekend, I just got around to looking at the photos from Robert’s game Saturday. Here he is taking off after a hit. The Hillcats were looking good Saturday (better than the Nats started out looking Sunday) and had a great game.

Sarah and Robert are off at the Cove with Robert’s class. Sarah brought cupcakes to celebrate her birthday there. We’ll do something later this week when she gets back and is recovered.

Robert has been talking about wanting to play catcher since the season started (and he liked it a lot last year as well). Now that the ball is off the tee, the catchers get full regalia. And it was all Robert wanted it to be.

Of course, he’s got to get a little better at catching the pitches, but that will come with time and practice.

It was more great weather for being outside and all the Hillcats had a great time.

The weather was impressively nice for an evening baseball game tonight. This time the Hillcats played the Thunder. This is Robert getting a hit on the coaches pitch.

It was team picture day today. The forecast was iffy but it turned out to be a nice afternoon. Robert and I got there early and it looked like there were only going to be three players in the team picture. But just as they were getting set up, several other folks showed up.

We’re still going for the trading card look so we did both team and individual photos. I guess to really get the look we need to go in for the official baseball pants. And actually, seeing one slide and one traffic accident at third base in the most recent game, it makes sense to have long pants even if it is hot.

That’s coach Young on the left, he’s done a great job getting the kids jazzed to play. And Robert is on the right in back row.

Today they played the Grizzlies and did a very good job. Robert had some good hits and fielding today despite the rainy weather — it was a warm rain now that summer weather seems to be here in earnest.

Baseball is back

Robert had his first game today. This year the team is the Hillcats. The team is looking good — Robert has his special form going for him. And coach JT managed to get Maury as our home field so Robert can ride his bike there.

Normally in Tee Ball, the last batter gets a home run and can run all the bases. In yesterday’s game the coaches decided to play with no outs but if the ball was still in play, you could keep running past one base per hit.

So Robert got a good hit (after a false start — you have to wait for the team in the field to be ready and Robert hit before they were ready). And took off. The first base coach said to keep running, so he did.

The third base coach said to keep on going to third, so he did.

And I’m sure more fun to play.

The weather has turned warm so the watermelon Sarah brought was very well received by the players and the coaches and parents.

We came home and relaxed for a bit before joining Hank and Sally for a very nice birthday dinner for Sarah (on top of the very nice birthday dinner we had last week when her brother was in town).

Tee Ball

Robert had a Tee Ball game last night: the Timber Rattlers (his current team) played the Intimidators (his team last year). This was an especially fun game because Sarah’s brother, David happened to be in town. He had fun watching, Robert had great time playing catch with him and then David Z., Sarah and I headed out to an early B-day dinner for Sarah. It was a great evening.

Busy Day

We started out the day with Sarah waking up pretty sick with some virusy thing. So Robert and I headed off to Lowes to spend his Christmas gift card on supplies to build a kitty condo. Yes we have our eyes on two kittens, “Pinker” and “Panzer,” who are just a bit young to bring home yet.

We expect to pick them up in week or two and keep them in the guest quarters while Zip Drive adjusts to the idea of new kittens in the house. The theory is with two, they will play with each other and not bother Zip Drive too much.

Robert had a couple good hits; played a good first base. And caught a ball bouncing to his short stop position and had a great throw back to first from there. (They rotate positions each inning.) Also, extra bonus, they used the jersey number for batting order so Robert was last at bat twice and the last batter gets a home run to let all the kids get back home.

Robert has been talking about this T-ball game for a couple weeks now. One of his schoolmates, Estee, plays for the Roughriders. She’s at bat while Robert is playing catcher here. A few more photos in Robert’s section.

Kickball!

Another glorious kickball day. Bright and sunny (maybe a little hot). They kids (about 4 to a team) each kicked twice per inning in the three inning game. Which was just about exactly as long as their interest stayed in the game. They kept gazing longer and longer at the playground next to the field. Hard to say who won, but I think the grey team’s fielding was better than our green team’s.

That’s Robert’s sneaky 3rd baseline kick above and his run to first. Evan is in the background running to third under the watchful eye of coach Sarah.

Practice next Wednesday then we’ll see who we play next Saturday…

Robert is on the Green Team in the freshly minted Alexandria Kickball league. He and his buddy Evan are on the same team and both having lots of fun. The first practice was last Wednesday and the first game was today. More action packed photos in Robert’s section.

Boy of Summer

I figured, before this whole ‘house renovation’ thing started that it might be fun to break up summer daycamp a bit with a week off for Baseball time. See, back in the spring, R saw a tee ball game and desperately wanted to play but you have to be 5 in this town to play, and until a few weeks from now - he’s still 4. Well, Virginia Baseball club http:www.eteamz.com/baseballcamp/) runs a cute thing for the 5-6 set, explaining the rules, letting the kids play etc. Robert is having lots of fun with coaches that remind me of his cousin Ian. Next week - back to our house and back to “regular” summer camp. (-SZap)
