Christmas trains…
last update: 12/24 @ 22:19
We had company for our trip the US Botanic Gardens for this year’s Christmas train display. Grandpoppa and SMom are up for Christmas. And the weather (while it started a little cloudy — rainy for their trip up) has been spectacularly nice. We all enjoyed both the indoor and outdoor train displays.

Big Pizza
last update: 12/19 @ 22:01
It was 72 degrees yesterday. December 18th. My compressed day home with Robert. We went to the zoo. We saw several animals, and in general were pretty subdued since we were both fighting colds. However, once Robert got a glance of the giant pizza (made out of gymnast type mats) in the children’s farm part of the zoo he was out of the buggy and sliding down the cheese wedge in an instant. Though in this picture he’s jumping off an onion slice. Very fun.

The tradition continues..
last update: 12/15 @ 20:49
O.K., so I don’t think my brother or I EVER took a picture with a Santa Claus growing up but for some reason, 2 years ago I was posessed by the idea that I should take one with Robert. (Getting punchy after so much maternity leave I guess.) Actually, I think my first Santa Claus picture was the year before, in Atlanta, while I was horribly sick with Robert, surrounded by teenage relations all taller than myself. Suffice it to say, this year the planets aligned and Daddy, Mommy and Robert all managed to molest Santa at the same time. You may now gag. -(Where IS John Waters when you need him?) Anyway, enjoy. And Happy Channukah.
Compare with this and this.

Robert brought his White Tiger for a birthday snuggle with me — my Birthday, not his or the tigers :).
He and Sarah got me a set of MythBusters DVDs, my folks sent a new book and Sarah’s folks and brother sent lots of CDs (gotta love Amazon’s Wish List — just have to remember to add to it…)

One of these things…
last update: 12/02 @ 14:18
… is not like the others.
We took a stroll down to City Hall to watch the annual Scottish Walk today. Our late fall heat wave ended last night and today was closer to normal December temperatures.
To be more specific: I guess 75 is normal for December in New Zealand, but pretty amazing for Alexandria.

More Farm-anigans
last update: 10/23 @ 22:04
Robert had another chance to check out local farm-age on Sunday. Daddy needed some “me” time, and COX Farm came highly recommended from Robert’s buddy Evan. So when Cecily called suggesting a ride out there, I hesitated but Robert said, “Robert go to farm with MY Cecily.” Okaaaaaaayy. I guess we’re going. Here he shows his farm prowess by exclaiming, and I’m not making this up, “You are a cow.” Yeah.

College?
last update: 08/23 @ 20:16
So, Robert didn’t eat much dinner but he was keeping us company tonight while Sarah and I finished our dinner. He brought over the Thomas the train catalog and pointed out all the different trains available.
After a few minutes of that I said, “Well, I think we should raid your college fund and buy a couple of each of these trains so we can have the full collection. Who needs college anyway?”
To which Robert replied, clear as a bell, “Robert! Robert need college!”
So I guess his college fund is safe (for now).

Robert had a very nice little party for his second birthday. We still need to move some photos over from Sarah’s camera, but there are couple more pictures in his section.
That’s Romeo, Robert, Ciaran and Caroline on the couch. We were trying to recreate the “mom’s group” couch photo. It’s amazing to look back and see how much they’ve grown — not a one of them seems likely to fall over trying to sit on the couch this time around.

We had a very nice trip down to Seven Devils this weekend. Actually we left Wednesday night and came back Sunday — that did a good job of avoiding the weekend traffic. She is working very hard on overcoming on some confusion as her brain is recuperating.

Happy Mother’s Day
last update: 05/14 @ 21:02
We had a just perfect mother’s day which started off with mommy sleeping in (thank you David.) After breakfast and playing with blocks off we went to Oxen Hill Farm (http://www.nps.gov/nace/oxhi/) for a look around.
What a terrific place that is. It’s a working farm run by the National Park Service and though it’s less than 15 minutes from us, we were the only ones there when we arrived. We attended the chicken feeding all by ourselves, were flogged by a rooster, and said hello to every kind of farm animal there is. Toward the end of our visit three other children and their various parents did show up but that just gave Robert an excuse to run back and visit the ducks, turkey and horsies one more time. After going home and getting a nice long nap for everyone during the rain we all went off for an early dinner. When the restaurant came out with a long stemmed rose, Robert grabbed it and happily yelled “STICK”. Yes, Robert, mommy has a stick with a flower. Very nice. I dare say a good time was had by all.

My old house?
last update: 05/10 @ 21:04
Found myself on woodland ave. of Georgia Ave. in Silver Spring the other day and thought I would drive by the old homestead. Alas, that tiny brick house on that huge plot of land has succumbed to the inevitable and my old house is now a new mondo suburban, as are all the neighboring houses around it. They left the azaleas though so that’s good.

Goodbye Penn Quarter
last update: 05/01 @ 00:05
Today was Robert’s last day at Penn Quarter Partnership daycare. I was good and didn’t cry, though each of the kids (and teachers) got lots of hugs. I’m thrilled that Robert will be going to Tri-Tots daycare, a.k.a. ‘the most beautiful daycare center on gawd’s green earth’, and with Ms. Marcia to boot, but still - those kids have been with Robert since they were all just 5 months old and I’ll miss them. And so will he.
Clockwise from Robert we have Finn, Sean, Verity, Xavier and Noah. Jeremiah came later and Guilia, (also known as JuJu) is away for the week and is probably not coming back either. Ms. Cherie is there handing out biscuits. Ladies and gentlemen, Robert has left the building.
I’m sure the denizens of the fourth Starbucks there in as many blocks will appreciate their lattes unperturbed by thoughts of who previously occupied their coffee purveyor’s space, she said unbitterly.

Su-un-day, In the park……
last update: 04/30 @ 23:59
Today I’m just posting a few shots of Robert’s day for his Grandmamama Sarah and his Grandpoppop Loren’s enjoyment. We had a quiet day at home with a few hours well spent at the playground around the corner, and a brief foray over to Whole Foods market for some treats and lunch.
Robert misses his daddy but is doing a great job of keeping his mommy company. He is a good boy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the North Carolina clan. More later. (PS. He built that block tower from scratch while Mommy was cleaning up from dinner. Not exactly fullfilling the ‘please put away your toys’ request but I thought it was cute anyway.) Skip entry if you’re afraid of cuteness. It’s interesting to see Robert develop awareness of time.

Demise of Penn Quarter
last update: 04/15 @ 21:09
Also while I was away David attended an ‘all-parents’ meeting at Robert’s daycare and was informed that, horror of horrors, PQ had lost their lease and would be closing in two months. David was e-mailing the proceedings to me while I sat in the back of my Arizona meeting and when that news came across I rather loudly exclaimed, “WHAT!!!!!?” I excused myself and the others returned to discussing various measures of return on investment for earned media coverage.
The turmoil and stress that this has caused the families and staff of PQ cannot be overstated. Below I came across Robert’s class practicing their ‘walking in a line’ skills. They have a ways to go yet but they sure are cute. (Click on the picture to get a better look at it.)

… less fun than I remember. I had hoped that since I had to travel to Arizona for work that I would at least get a restful night in and maybe order some nice room service. But DC weather had other ideas and after missing my connection for the last flight out from Dallas Ft.Worth I spent a few fitfull hours in an airport hotel there before heading out to catch the oh-dark-thirty flight to my meeting in the morning. After all that I was only 15 minutes late for the start of it. Still, I got a nice look at the sunrise over DFW terminal C walkway.

Joshtoberfest!!!
last update: 04/02 @ 14:09
We went by Josh’s 30th birthday party and Robert had a good time playing with Maya (and borrowing some of her toys, like this red ball). Maya set a great example of sharing.

Top O’ The Irish To You
last update: 03/22 @ 20:56
Mrs. Tonya made the kids hats for St. Patty’s day. The kids then took their hats off. Except for Robert. He liked his hat. A lot. And so did I. (And so did the metro station manager, and so did buddy Ciaron, and so did the waiter in the restaurant we went to……..)

Midas Touch
last update: 03/12 @ 15:32
You’d think I could do a better job keeping my finger away from the lens…
Actually, we happened upon a group of bag pipers practicing in the Hirshhorn’s Sculpture Garden — today was Washington’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade. (We just wanted to ride the carousel again.) More photos in Robert’s section.

last update: 02/12 @ 13:13
Robert got a chance to go SLEDDING today. A good time was had by all; photos in his section. (You’ll have to scroll past the rocking horse photos — maybe you’ll slow down for the metro photos on your way to the snow photos.)

Working on a series…
last update: 02/04 @ 14:30
..of Robert eating corn on the cob pictures. He does like his corn on the cob. We stopped at National Airport on the way home (actually met there, Sarah and Robert we two trains ahead of me) last week for dinner at Legal Seafoods. Where, once again, Robert devoured his corn on the cob — he even had a second piece for dessert.

Trapped, Stranded, Marooned
last update: 01/28 @ 15:47
The new driveway and sidewalk are going in next door. It was a bit frustrating to have the sidewalk/driveway guy knock on the door and warn us we might want to move our car so it wouldn’t be trapped only to find out the car had been rifled and in a effort not to draw attention to himself, the rifler didn’t close the door all the way. So we had a dead battery. Which explains how our car was trapped by the construction next door.
Fortunately, we don’t need to drive that much. And when they didn’t pour the contcrete as quickly as expected, they laid some boards down so we could get the car out. And AAA was quick to come by and give us a jump.

No more cranes…
last update: 01/21 @ 13:01
Robert’s Whole Foods is open!!!
Compare this photo to the construction photos.
We’ve been watching this go up for a while, and anticipating having a walkable grocery store again (we can walk now, but it’s not a short walk).

Must remember….
last update: 01/16 @ 21:50
…that Robert really enjoys a snack at his step stool seat. I expect he will be outgrowing it soon. I just noticed this morning that he now casually rests his arm on the crib railing when he stands up the crib.

The US Botanical Garden Train
last update: 01/08 @ 16:11
For a little post New Years fun we took a look at the new USBG and caught the last day of the Christmas train. Also fun, seeing the replica of the Washington mall and train tracks rendered entirely in plant detria. (Notice the acorn caps on the top of the fence and the wheat used for the plantation shutters.)
More photos in Robert’s section.
